PERI-MENOPAUSE

Perimenopause is the time, around age 40, when your hormones start to fluctuate and your body begins to change. You might still have periods, sometimes regular, sometimes all over the place, but you could also notice symptoms like weight gain particularly around the middle, brain fog, mood swings, hot flushes, poor sleep & lack of libido. This is your body's early warning system that things are shifting and symptoms may start as early as in your 30’s (POI: Premature Ovarian insufficiency)

Menopause

Menopause is one day! The 365th day you’ve gone without a period, marking the end of your reproductive years. It usually happens around age 51, and it’s caused by a natural drop in the hormones estrogen, progesterone & testosterone. This hormonal shift can bring a range of symptoms, from hot flushes and night sweats to low mood, joint pain, fatigue, UTI’s and painful, uncomfortable sex. Medically induced menopause can be brought on by cancer treatments and ovarian surgery resulting in immediate symptoms & side effects.

Post Menopause

Post menopause is a long-term hormonal phase where symptoms can still continue or even show up for the first time. Your estrogen levels remain low, which can impact your heart, bones, brain, vagina & bladder. Your progesterone levels are low, which can affect your mood, sleep & thicken the lining of your uterus. Your testosterone is in decline which can lower your libido and decrease cognitive function. So while your periods have stopped, the need for support definitely hasn’t. Post menopause is not the end as it implies, for many it is just the beginning.
